Was the onset of labor gradual or sudden for your first child?

I'm 38 weeks (or almost 39 depending on the ultrasound!) and am getting eager. Besides pretty constant braxton hicks for the last two weeks, no signs at all. Just wondering about other moms experiences, did you suddenly get strong contractions etc or did it build up for a few days?
