How to keep my nail polish looking good at the beach?

I am going to the beach this weekend and I am planning to do my toenails with a hot pink nail polish I got. My friend (who I'm going with) says it will chip off because of the sand. Do you think adding a clear coat will make it stay? I really don't want to have to re-do my nails. Do you think I should just apply something less noticeable?
